Joyce arranca de unos temas específicos que tendrán su respectivo desarrollo, pero estos desarrollos requieren largo tiempo. Hay progreso —se pasa de los angeles noche a los angeles mañana—, y sin duda, cuando se nos ofrezca el libro en su integridad, veremos que en el espíritu de Earwicker entra en juego cierto drama psicológico; pero, a medida que avanzamos, vamos de círculo en círculo. Y mientras en Ulysses hay sólo un paralelo, en este nuevo libro hay toda una serie: Adán y Eva, Tristán e Isolda, quick y Vanessa, Caín y Abel, Miguel y Lucifer, Wellington y Napoleón. Es evidene que l. a. multiplicación de las referencias profundiza y amplía los angeles significación de Earwicker: Anna Livia y él son el eterno femenino y el eterno masculino, y, durante las primeras horas de letargo y horror del sueño, Earwicker es Adán caído por los angeles pérdida de l. a. gracia, que será redimido —se cube que así lo anunció Joyce— con el renuevo de los angeles luz matinal.
